DYMM Sultan of Selangor Residence The private residence of His Royal Highness (HRH), Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, located in Bukit Jelutong promotes a merge between luxury and sustainability and proves that these two do not always have to be mutually exclusive. The house which will feature lush greenery and waterscapes amid a stone clad, four-story home will be equipped with solar PV panels, energy efficient equipment, the usage of building materials made in part from recycled materials and designed with advanced water management features inclusive of rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling. The architectural features of the residence, featuring but not limited to insulated stone clad walls, solar low-E floor to floor height windows, insulated roofs, shading features and natural ventilation; function to reduce the direct heat gain from the external building facade. The design of the internal courtyard is such that the lower floors will be naturally shaded. The high window to wall ratio, allows daylight penetration into 85% of total habitable rooms within the residence; combined with the energy saving lighting system in the living room and master bedroom, the daytime electrical lighting energy consumption can be reduced. The usage of Solar PV and Solar Water Heater, promotes the carbon emission reduction strategy by harnessing the energy from the sun to compliment the residence’s electricity usage and heat the water used for the shower in the residence. Strategies implemented to improve noise insulation from the building external to internal space and between adjacent rooms within buildings are: designing the most suitable duct size and having a wall system with high STC to reduce the noise to the required level. The specifications materials and products used throughout this residence are low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) and with no added UREA formaldehyde. Low-VOC products such as paints & coatings and non-UREA formaldehyde products such as composite wood products, adhesives, foams and draperies; improve the indoor air quality for the residence occupants. Long term exposure to high VOCs indoor can contribute to sick building syndrome. The residence incorporates extensive greenery (>50%) to its surrounding as a way to sustain biodiversity in the area as well as an approach to passively cool the surrounding. The storm water and rainwater is managed with an on-site rainwater/storm water harvesting tank; where the water collected in the rainwater tank will be used for general washing and irrigation purposes. Semi-Pervious Driveway Pavement will further contribute in the storm water management. The incorporation of low flow water fittings within the residence will reduce the potable water usage by a sizeable amount (>40%). Furthermore, the excess water from the master bedroom shower will be treated and recycled through the greywater recycling system. The treated/ recycled water which will be used for the garden taps will further reduce the overall potable water consumption. The implementation of all the measures above, which includes energy efficiency, indoor air quality, sustainable site management, water management and materials & resources, creates a sustainable residence.
