Desaru Coast Adventure Water Park (DCAWP) will be a large-scale water park designed to be a key destination driver for the new Desaru Coast Resort. The water park shall be built over 21 acres and has a design day capacity of 12,000 visitors. It will feature a water coaster ride which is the first in Malaysia, a large wave pool with a 170 meter long sandy beach, a surf simulator, the traditional lazy river wrapping around the water slides and other water slide attractions. Other components of DCAWP include a main retail, F&B outlets and an events space for group activities. The look and feel of DCAWP will incorporate the traditional architecture of a Malaysian kampong and fishing village and the sense of organized chaos typically found in a kampong. As a whole, the thematic design of DCAWP will convey a sense of heritage, history and culture of Desaru. With a large expected visitor turnout, the park will adopt a recycling policy to reduce significant waste generated from the theme park. There will be 119 recycling collection points across the water park to facilitate visitors and staff to dispose their recyclable waste such as plastic, paper and aluminum. Used cooking oil discarded from food preparation activities from all F&B outlets will be collected and converted into purified biodiesel. DAWP will adopt a comprehensive water and energy consumption monitoring system. Due to the nature of a water park in which there will be an extensive usage of water, digital water submeters will be installed at all water rides and at each block of the DCAWP to monitor water consumption and to detect early leakage and avoid potential water loss. Energy submeters will also be installed to monitor energy usage of the park, including water rides equipment and buildings’ electricity consumption. Both water meters and energy meters will be linked to the Energy Management System (EMS) for energy monitoring, recording and control. The park as a whole will have a building energy performance designed to exceed the MS1525 standard with 27% energy improvement, where it will incorporate energy efficient lighting and energy efficient split air-conditioning units at all buildings. Most buildings in the park will be non-air-conditioned to reduce energy consumption without compromising occupants’ thermal comfort through shading from building roof. Water efficient fittings will be installed at all buildings which is anticipated to reduce more than 40% of water consumption as compared to base case. To further reduce the park’s operational carbon footprint, a shuttle bus will be provided for both park visitors and staff. This service will be part of a greater public transportation network in the Desaru Coast Resort and will be run by the Desaru Coast Resort operator. Besides that, the construction of the water park will adhere to environmental practices to reduce pollution related to construction works through waste recycling and earthworks control. Last but not least, 21% of the park site area will be covered with greenery to function as a biodiversity enhancement feature and also to serve as a buffer zone to reduce water runoff during a storm event. The heat island effect due to the hardscape will be alleviated by shading the pavements with trees to provide comfort for visitors walking in the park. Garden waste will also be composted in house to meet the landscape fertilizer’s requirement.
