Astaka Taman Tun Sardon is envisioned as a modern and sustainable hawker centre that reflects the commitment of the local authority towards promoting environmentally responsible development in urban community spaces. This redevelopment incorporates multiple green building features designed to reduce the project's ecological footprint while enhancing user comfort and operational efficiency. One of the most prominent sustainable features of the facility is the insulated roof system, which is designed in accordance with the Malaysia Standard MS1525 for thermal performance. The use of high-performance insulation materials minimizes heat gain, thus significantly reducing the internal ambient temperature. This contributes to a more comfortable dining experience while lowering dependency on mechanical cooling systems. Complementing the roof insulation is a low-energy ventilation system that includes large-scale natural ventilators, energy-efficient fans, and strategic architectural openings. These elements promote cross-ventilation and improve indoor air quality without the need for air-conditioning. The natural ventilation system is supported by a design that maximizes natural daylighting, with ample openings along the building’s perimeter and skylights integrated into the roof. These passive design features help reduce reliance on artificial lighting during the day. To further support energy efficiency, all lighting within the complex is LED-based, offering lower energy consumption and longer lifespan compared to conventional lighting solutions. These LED fixtures are selected to provide bright and uniform illumination with minimal maintenance. In alignment with water conservation goals, Astaka Taman Tun Sardon is equipped with water-saving sanitary fittings such as low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets. These fixtures help to reduce overall water usage without compromising user experience. Additionally, the project incorporates a rainwater harvesting system that collects and stores rainwater for non-potable uses such as cleaning and landscape irrigation, further reducing the demand on municipal water supply. An innovative feature of the project is the introduction of a green EV motorcycle charging station, designed to encourage the use of electric two-wheelers among hawkers and patrons. This green mobility initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality, aligning with broader sustainable transportation goals. In terms of organic waste management, the facility will also implement a composting system that processes food waste generated by hawkers into nutrient-rich compost. This reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills and promotes a circular waste management approach within the community. Together, these features demonstrate a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to sustainability. From passive cooling strategies and efficient energy systems to water conservation and waste reduction, Astaka Taman Tun Sardon sets a benchmark for green public infrastructure in Penang. The project not only enhances the operational efficiency and environmental performance of the hawker centre but also promotes environmental awareness among users, contributing positively to the community's sustainability journey.
